Students will work on elaboration for the third write prompt for the Unit 2 essay. Unit 2 essay will be due Thursday, January 11. After completion of the third prompt students will have the opportunity to revise and add to their unit 2 essay. Completed Unit 2 essay will be due the following the week.
Essential Question: How can we deal with forces beyond our control?
Please be sure your students have sticky notes!!
Students need 6 sticky-notes per chapter to help with the essay at the end of book.
They will be using the signposts to help understand the text. We learned the signposts at the beginning of the year.
Aha Moment: Sudden realization

Contrast and Contradiction: Acting out of character (not as expected)
Words of the Wiser: Getting advice from someone older and wiser.

Homework: Assignments not completed during class will be homework and must be completed by the start of the next class unless otherwise stated.
Students are expected to come to class prepared by bringing sharpened pencils, assigned reading, journals, binders, and charged computer.
Students are responsible for taking any quiz/test or turn in assignments when they are absent. They are to talk to their teachers and set up a date and time.
Students may come in on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays before school to get help. The library is also available in the mornings for students wanting to work before school.

What your student will learn this year in 6th Grade:
In Grade 6, instructional time will focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking. Students will be using EngageNY, which should be familiar to returning USD 475 students.
Students will be utilizing Pearson online materials for their “textbook” as well as using the Schoology learning management system in their class. The curriculum begins with biology, focusing on studying the diversity of life. Unit two focuses on water and the atmosphere. Unit three includes study of the Earth’s surface, followed by a study of Chemistry. All grade levels end the year with a focus on Health and Human Sexuality. Throughout the year we will develop needed skills that are building blocks to the study of science.
Language Arts: Students will be focusing on a number of texts – determining meaning and finding evidence to support claims. Most of the year will be spent on the novels Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, and Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. Students will demonstrate their skills and understanding in argumentative essays at the end of each unit.
Social Studies: Social Studies will focus on Ancient World History. Students will study ancient civilizations from around the world beginning with the first hunter-gatherers and ending with life during the Middle Ages (Egypt, China, Rome, Greece, etc.). Students will demonstrate their skills and understanding through writing, projects, and collaborative discussions.
Beginning a few weeks into the school year, students will be placed into a Monday – Thursday Academic Strategies class based on their academic needs. Students will receive extra practice in math, reading or writing, or be challenged through extension classes. These placements are based on testing done at the beginning of the year, as well as studnet performance from the previous year. You will receive more information about these placements during October conferences.
